“Thanks for working your magic and making me look way better than in real life!! I had so much fun, I felt like a movie star! Thanks again for doing such a wonderful job and making me feel so comfortable when I was so out of my comfort zone. Usually I’m on the other side of the camera taking pictures of my kids! But it was a really fun experience and I’d do it again in a heart beat!” ~ Kathryn Christian Stevens

The moment. Dance photography is all about being in the moment for the photographer as it is for the dancer. A relationship of movement and stillness – being seen and seeing. A skilled photographer of movement has exquisite timing and knowledge to anticipate the moment and make it last forever.

I was invited to team up with some talented makeup artists and models, lead by elite trainer Shannon McCune Sells and Utah’s superb MUA Missy Lovett representing Motives by Loren Ridinger, an amazing line of cosmetics. We put the makeup to the test with bright studio lighting. It past the test with flying colors. I’ll probably insist all make up artists use Motives from now on. No shiny hot spots!! It covered beautifully and flawlessly. Go here to see more.

Here’s how we did this shot:

Jon Miller – pictured below – brought his new power paint pole bought at Lowes and attached an SB 800, using my Photek Softlighter II. Jon was behind the door trying to look inconspicuous. He was holding this rig while sweating profusely. The Softlighter spread light beautifully around the room and gave definition to the model’s hair. I exposed for some ambient sunlight coming in from behind the model.

I had another assistant holding a Cowboy Studio 16″ beauty dish over my right shoulder in the hallway. In order to fill shadows and put some catch light in Sebastian’s eyes, I had another assistant hold a white reflector under the subjects.

I had a great idea! Get some creative friends together and do still shots portraying a classic movie character. When Elizabeth Taylor was in her last days, I thought of  doing one of her characters in tribute. Gloria Wandrous in the Oscar winning film Butterfield 8 seemed like a good choice. I’d been wanting to work with a local Salt Lake City actress and model for several months. Mo Stones jumped at the idea to do this project. Now, who to do the styling? I was referred to a very talented hair stylist and make up artist, working at the McCarty Agency Salon, Genevieve Jaslowski. My colleague, Jon Miller, and I are avid disciples of David Hobby and the “Strobist” lighting techniques. He also owns a lot more strobes than I, so it wasn’t hard to get him “on board”. (Only Jon will get that joke.) My good friend and personal hair stylist, Stephanie Kittleson of Salon 203, was asked to come by and loan us her Yorkie, Sebastian. The location had to be something classically timeless in styling, knowing I was not going to get any scene authenticity for New York City in Salt Lake City – certainly not any of the night club bar scenes. The Perry Hotel was perfect. I will post some technical aspects having to do with the lighting in the next blog post as well as some of the more comical stuff that went on having the funniest woman in Salt Lake City as my model. Here a some of my favorite shots:
